Air Fryer Poached Eggs – Easy, Delicious & Perfectly Runny

Air fryer poached eggs are a simple and delicious way to make a classic breakfast without using a saucepan full of simmering water. Traditional poached eggs can sometimes feel difficult because you have to control the water temperature, create a gentle swirl, and carefully slide the egg into the water. An air fryer offers another method that is easy to try at home.

With just a few basic ingredients and an oven-safe ramekin, you can make soft, tender poached eggs with a beautifully cooked white and a warm, creamy yolk. They are delicious on toast, English muffins, avocado toast, breakfast bowls, or alongside fresh vegetables.

The best part is that this recipe requires very little preparation. Once you understand how your particular air fryer cooks, you can adjust the cooking time to get the egg exactly the way you like it.

Why Make Poached Eggs in an Air Fryer?

Air fryers are popular because they make many recipes quick and convenient. Although they are usually associated with crispy foods, they can also be useful for simple breakfast recipes.

Air fryer poached eggs are:

  • Easy to prepare
  • Made with only a few ingredients
  • Quick enough for busy mornings
  • Soft and tender
  • Delicious with toast
  • Easy to customize
  • Convenient when you do not want to use a stovetop

There is also less cleanup compared with making several eggs in a saucepan.

Ingredients

You only need a few simple ingredients.

Main Ingredients

  • 1 large fresh egg
  • About ½ cup hot water
  • A small amount of cooking spray or oil
  • Pinch of salt
  • Black pepper, optional

Optional Serving Ingredients

You can serve your poached egg with many different foods, including:

  • Toast
  • Whole-grain bread
  • English muffins
  • Avocado
  • Tomatoes
  • Spinach
  • Mushrooms
  • Sautéed vegetables
  • Fresh herbs
  • Cheese
  • Breakfast potatoes

Fresh eggs generally hold their shape better, which can make the finished poached egg easier to handle.

Equipment Needed

You do not need special equipment.

You will need:

  • Air fryer
  • Small oven-safe ramekin
  • Measuring cup
  • Slotted spoon
  • Small plate or serving dish
  • Cooking spray or a little oil

Make sure your ramekin is suitable for the temperature used in your air fryer.

How to Make Air Fryer Poached Eggs

Step 1: Prepare the Air Fryer

Begin by checking your air fryer basket and making sure it is clean and dry.

Preheat the air fryer to approximately 160°C (320°F) for about 2–3 minutes.

Some air fryers heat very quickly, while others take a little longer. If your model does not require preheating, you can still make the recipe without it, but the cooking time may vary.

Step 2: Prepare the Ramekin

Choose a small oven-safe ramekin that fits comfortably inside your air fryer basket.

Lightly spray the inside with cooking spray or brush it with a tiny amount of oil.

This can help prevent the egg from sticking to the sides of the dish.

Do not use too much oil because the egg is going to be cooked with water.

Step 3: Add Hot Water

Pour approximately ½ cup of hot water into the ramekin.

The water should be hot but does not need to be boiling.

The amount of water can depend on the size and shape of your ramekin. The goal is to give the egg enough water to cook gently without overflowing the container.

Step 4: Crack in the Egg

Carefully crack one egg into the water.

Try to crack the egg close to the surface of the water so that the yolk does not break.

If you are making multiple eggs, it is usually easier to cook them separately unless your ramekin is large enough to comfortably hold them without crowding.

Step 5: Add Seasoning

You can add a very small pinch of salt before cooking, although seasoning afterward works well too.

If you enjoy pepper, it is often better to add freshly ground black pepper after cooking.

Step 6: Place the Ramekin in the Air Fryer

Carefully place the ramekin inside the air fryer basket.

Be cautious because the ramekin and water can become very hot.

Close the air fryer.

Step 7: Cook the Egg

Cook the egg at approximately 160°C (320°F) for 5–7 minutes.

The exact cooking time depends on:

  • Your air fryer model
  • The size of the egg
  • The size of the ramekin
  • Whether the egg was refrigerated
  • How firm you want the yolk

Start checking around the 5-minute mark.

If you prefer a very soft yolk, you may need less cooking time. If you prefer the yolk more firmly cooked, allow it to cook a little longer.

Step 8: Check the Egg

Carefully remove the ramekin from the air fryer.

The egg white should look set while the yolk should remain soft if you are aiming for a classic poached egg.

Remember that the egg can continue cooking slightly from the residual heat, so it is better not to overcook it.

Step 9: Remove the Egg

Use a slotted spoon to gently lift the egg from the water.

Allow excess water to drain through the spoon.

Place the poached egg on a small plate or directly onto your toast.

Step 10: Season and Serve

Add salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.

For extra flavor, you can add chopped parsley, chives, paprika, or a small amount of grated
